• FORTH

From Chickenhead@VERT to All on Friday, January 09, 2026 19:26:07
So a couple years ago I decided to explore the FORTH language. I started out using HES FORTH on the C64 emulator. Graduated to gForth on Linux. And then DurexFORTH on the C64.

I am quite convinced that FORTH is what I have been missing. It has actually made my math better. Compared to object oriented programming it is almost the opposite, extreme monomorphism at it's finest.

I did a couple things with FORTH. First, I recreated the old Milton-Bradley game from 1979, "Comp IV". Basically a simple version of Mastermind. But I am trying really hard to make my own version of the classic "Labyrinth" game that was first seen on the Commodore PET. It has been a fun experiment, especially learning how to make a maze using a recursive algorithm. I've got the maze, now I am working on a crap ASCII 3D view of it. Almost there.

I have this idea of trying to make an Ultima style game next. Something simple, like Ultima II or III.

[Your blood pressure just went up.]

Why did I think that MERLIN, the handheld game, was written in FORTH?

    Awesome!

I love FORTH and always have, despite never having ever built anything 'real' with the language.

I had FORTH for just about every computer system I've ever had across my 45ish years with computers. Kind of amazing when you think about it!

FIG Forth for Atari 8 bit
    JForth for Amiga
    Can't remember which for my 486 :)
    And these days GForth

Nearly half a century of twiddling without ever having built anything :)

Have you ever looked at Factor? It's kind of an attempt to modernize FORTH?
